WHERE ARE WE?
Wassiagomin Lodge's Ontario bear hunting area is
located adjacent to the world's largest game preserve. The
Chapleau Game Preserve was
set aside in 1925 as a protected area banning all hunting and trapping with in
it's boundaries Ontario is known to have the worlds largest population of Black
Bears (estimated at 400,000) and this 7000 sq km area has perhaps the largest
concentration of Bears in all of Canada.
In government wildlife surveys
measuring Bear populations, our wildlife management area is always at the very
top of the list. Many of our hunters see several bears before they choose to bag
one You will be the only person hunting in a specified area. This will ensure
you of a quality hunt without any other hunting pressure nearby.
HOW WE HUNT
Upon your arrival at Wassiagomin Lodge we'll get you settled in, go through some
of the necessary paper work then we'll start to prepare you for your Ontario
bear hunt. Our method of bear hunting is over baited blinds. We will do our best
to provide each hunter with an active bait-one which is being hit on a regular
basis (at least a couple times a week) by a bear. We do limit the number of
hunters we take each week so that our baits our not over hunted during any one
season. This also permits us to take advantage of varying weather conditions by
rotating our hunters as those factors dictate. Except for a few stands behind
the lodge all our baits are placed around the lake. This is a remote area, you
will see no signs of logging and we do not drive to any of our stands.
The first night of the hunt your guide will take you and your hunting partner to the baits
and make sure you get set up. For the month before your arrival we have been
baiting your stand every 2-3 days. We have had great success baiting our stands
with several tonnes of ground livestock feed plus an assortment if other
goodies. Great care is taken not to contaminate the bait areas with human scent,
gasoline or oil from boats and a record is maintained of all activity at each
bait. it is also very important for your own success that you take great care in
keeping the baits and blinds clean. With this in mind we will provide you with a
bottle just in case nature calls while you on the blind.
Generally we only hunt in the evenings and like to see you on your stand by late afternoon .This will
provide you with 4-6 hrs of hunting time. Each hunter and his partner will take
their boat to their blinds with one dropping the other off. All stands are
located a short distance from the lake's shore.
When archery hunting, bows must meet the following specifications.
Crossbow and Longbow Specifications
Crossbows:
- Draw length must be al least (11.8 in.);
- Draw weight must be at least (119 lbs.);
- Bolt head must be at least (0.9 in.) at the widest point; and, there must be at
least two cutting edges of straight, sharp, unserrated, barbless steel.
Longbows:
- Draw weight must be at least (48.5 lbs.) at draw length of (27.6 in.) or less;
- Arrow length must be at least (23.6 in.);
- Broad head must be at least (0.9 in. at the widest point; and, there must be at least two cutting edges of straight, sharp, unserrated,
barbless steel
Rifle Hunt
Many of our bait sites are geared for the rifle hunter in mind with ranges
available up to 100 yards. We can set you up at a site with the yardage that you
are most comfortable with. We recommend placing your tree stand no lower than 12
feet high and down wind of the bait station to minimize the chances of the bear
winding your scent. The same wind and scent tactics will apply if you prefer to
hunt from one of our ground blinds. It is a good practice to keep your hunting
clothes in a separate bag away from other clothing articles to maintain as scent
free as possible while in your stand. Changing into your hunting clothes just
prior to accessing your stand and applying scent shield are two more tactics
that can put the odds in your favor to harvest your Black Bear. While a Bear's
nose is it's strongest asset hunters must not underestimate the Bear's sight and
hearing abilities. You will greatly increase your odds of tagging a nice trophy
by minimizing your movement and noise while hunting in your stand. Be patient
and let the Bear present you with a good shot.
Gun Specifications
- A rim-fire rifle, a shotgun smaller than 20 gauge when loaded with shot or any
